Following on from yesterday’s review comes this one, a game which is a remake of the same original, and which has a title almost as similar. Speaking of awkward introductions, this Breakout clone has you breaking bricks in order to impress a girl at a bar. Before this review goes any further... let me suggest that you don’t use this game as a guide for successful dating.
The story is this: You are in a bar and you’ve had a few too many drinks. You stagger over to a way-too-pretty girl and attempt to strike up a conversation. It’s not going well, fortunately - and this is where the game starts to fail as a dating sim – the conversation turns into bricks. To impress her, you throw a ball at those bricks. She continuously says “hi” to you and to impress her even more, you catch these introductions on your paddle. Keep doing this until all the bricks are gone and you’ve won her heart. Did I mention that this game is not a substitute for actual human interaction?
Although the game does suffer from a confusing story line and a mishmash of genres which never should have happened, there is one nice feature... wait, no there isn’t. The ball moves way too fast and the controls are as awkward as the attempts to impress this girl. Her impassive face moves ever so slightly through her four stages of ‘annoyed,’ ‘interested,’ ‘happy’ and finally ‘in love,’ but her autonomous features just aren’t interesting enough to make me want to keep playing the same level over and over again. Different women, different brick patterns and perhaps not so many speech bubbles could make this one better, but it just wouldn’t make it good. This is simply an all too awkward game in every sense of the word.
