To explain what an impact Mario has had on the world of video games would be a redundant exercise. Needless to say, Cadog is a game which clearly takes its influence from the visual stylings of Mario. However, instead of going with a straight forward remake, the thing about this game is the landscape curves around you.

The unique style of this platformer immediately sets it apart from others. Basically the character just jumps around and inexplicably wants to move in the right direction. It’s your job to help him do so.

Though the game is never quite intentionally difficult nor does it contain an extremely compelling story, the visual style is something so out of the ordinary, it warrants a longer play than if it was a linear game. Unfortunately, the game lacks options for changing difficulty modes which means that you’re chucked into a world where the merest scratch is a near mortal wound. Finally, the jumping mechanic, especially when combined with running, can be extremely unforgiving when it comes to mis-timed jumps.

It’s an interesting concept which unfortunately doesn’t stick due in large part to the wonky controls. If those were fine tuned, even with the brutal health reductions from clumsy baddies, the game would shine as a unique example of someone taking a old idea and tweaking it just so into something new. In fact, that’s what it is, and you should take a look without hesitation. Something like this won’t come back fast.
